Next steps
- Open the app’s settings with an adult. Look for Privacy or Account and choose a private profile if the app offers one.
- Review followers and friends. Remove contacts you do not want. A familiar name or profile photo alone is not a reason to accept someone.
- Limit messages, comments, tags and group invitations to the people you choose. Check whether each feature has a separate setting.
- Turn off precise location sharing when it is unnecessary. Also review the app’s access to contacts, camera and microphone on your device.
- Check a post before sharing: Does it show an address, school or where you are now? Ask people in a photo before sharing it and respect a no.
- Check what others can see if the app offers a profile preview. Review your choices when features change. A private profile cannot stop someone copying a post.
Avoid
- Do not share your live location or daily route publicly.
- Do not pass on other people’s photos or messages without asking.
For parents
- Names and menus vary between apps and versions. Use the platform’s current help and let your child make the choices alongside you.
- A profile name or photo may still be public. Private does not mean invisible.
