Next steps
- Choose one app with an adult. Check its current age requirement, terms and content before creating an account. Use your real date of birth when signing up.
- Create a long, unique password that you do not share with friends. Ask for help setting up two-step verification and account recovery where available.
- Make the account private where possible. Choose together who can message, comment, tag you and add you to groups.
- Keep your address, school, phone number and current location off the public profile. Your username does not need to be your full name.
- Find the app’s block and report controls. Show the adult where you would tap if someone pressures you or sends something upsetting.
- Agree on breaks, purchases and an adult you can ask. Review the settings after the first week and discuss what works and what needs changing.
Avoid
- Do not use a false age to get around the app’s age requirement.
- Do not share passwords or one-time codes with friends or new contacts.
For parents
- Explain the settings you choose and what any parental supervision reveals. Also show which information you cannot access.
- If the app is unsuitable, choose another way to connect. Make sure your child can still receive class arrangements without that app.
